The Tale of Tavarua took place early in the 19th century. Ratu (Chief) Kini Vosailagi was the powerful Ka Levu (Paramount Chief) of the entire Southwestern region of Fiji. Upon visiting the outer island of Malolo, Ratu Kini was tricked, possibly by family members, separating him from the safety of his tribal warriors and following an ambush he was mortally wounded. Fleeing his attackers, Ratu Kini used his remaining strength to swim several miles to Tavarua Island, where he died wounded and exhausted. The owners of Tavarua Island, although blameless in the death of the Ka Levu, feared they would be seen as co-conspirators and would face brutal revenge. So they gave Tavarua to Ratu Kini’s family to insure their own safety.

Today, the current Ka Levu and community members have allowed Tavarua to be modestly developed into a small vacation resort where you can find beautiful and colorful sealife and world-class surfing waves. You may also find Druku, the great-great grandson of Ratu Kini, fishing, surfing or laughing with the guests. As for Ratu Kini buried on the island, his spirit and legacy lives on through anyone who visits Tavarua.
Tavarua Resort books the island out for one week (seven nights) at a time. Actual bookings are handled by Tavarua Island Tours. Each week a "Group Leader" who is your main point of contact works to balance the week with compatible people. That way if you are traveling with your family, chances are you will find a week with other families, couples with other couples, etc... Antidote Travel has created a special "Events" section to help connect people interested in going to Tavarua find a reservation within groups when there is a chance of availability.

Do the accommodations have air conditioning? Tavarua has a mild tropical climate and ceiling fans are usually adequate for cooling.  However, should the temperature rise or an afternoon nap beckons, each guest bure is equipped with air conditioning for your comfort.

How many guests can come each week? Tavarua accommodates an average of 36 guests.

What do I need to bring? ?Sun protection is key – so a hat, sunglasses and sun-screen are necessary and useful to bring. It is also a good idea to bring basic first aid items and your personal remedies such as Aspirin, Tylenol, etc...  Many guests bring a light board bag for transporting their board to and from the surf in the boats, and a waterproof bag for the necessary surf gear out at the break. Replacement gear such as extra leashes, wax and fins are also a good idea. Our boutique carries many of the necessities, should you forget anything at home.

I don't surf - what can I do? Tavarua Island offers a variety of activities including fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, tennis, fitness center, pool and ping pong, volleyball, basketball and soft boards for kiddieland fun. But if the only type of activity you enjoy is a good book, some beach combing and a Mai Tai – then we cater to that as well.   We also offer a full service boutique for souvenir shopping, and sundries you could have forgotten at home.

Do I need to exchange money before coming? No need – we accept Visa and Mastercard and the US dollar.

Is tipping the staff allowed? We ask that if you would like to Tip the staff that you ask the office staff to add the amount to your final bill. All tips are distributed evenly to the staff at holiday time.

Can Tavarua accommodate my dietary requirements? Yes, please let us know in advance and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Are children welcome? Yes, we welcome children but do have some limitations. If your child is two years or below we ask that you receive pre-approval from the island staff.  We also ask that you bring any child specific remedies or medicines that you may need as these are not readily available.

Can I call home? There is a public phone available to you in the office. The staff can help arrange for your call. Internet access is also available through the office via high speed DSL.

What is your cancellation policy? We recommend that all Tavarua Island guests purchase trip cancellation or interruption insurance, as well as medical and evacuation coverage.  Since deposits and final payments are non-refundable, (unless a replacement can be found), we strongly urge all guests to purchase insurance that covers airline interruption, and inclement weather.

What is the dress code? Dress code is Comfortable. Tavarua island sulus (similar to sarong), dresses, shorts and t-shirts are available for purchases at the boutique.

Do I need adaptors for my electrical equipment? Standard US appliances will require both an adaptor and converter. Power supply on the island runs at 240 volt. Please ask reception when plugging in any device as the wrong device could destroy our power systems and your appliance.
