Interesting Family Vacation Ideas

Every spring break and summer break, I see the same pattern.

Families say they want something different but then they default to the usual suspects: an all-inclusive resort, a cruise, or another trip to Disney.

And those trips can absolutely be fun. But they’re also predictable.

If you’re willing to venture just a little beyond the usual playbook, there are destinations around the world that are just as manageable for families — but far more interesting. The kinds of trips where your kids see something new, try different foods, and come home talking about waterfalls, castles, temples, or night markets instead of just the hotel pool.

These are some of my favorite family travel ideas for clients who want something memorable, cultural, and a little outside the ordinary — but still comfortable and well-organized.

Norway: The Fjords + Oslo

Norway is one of the most visually dramatic places in Europe.

Imagine towering waterfalls cascading down cliffs into deep blue fjords, tiny villages tucked between mountains, and scenic train rides that feel like they belong in a nature documentary.

Many families combine Oslo with the fjord region, traveling through places like Flåm or Voss along the way. The famous Flåm Railway is widely considered one of the most beautiful train rides in the world.

If your family loves nature, fresh air, and jaw-dropping scenery, Norway is hard to beat.

Slovenia: Ljubljana + Lake Bled + The Julian Alps

Slovenia might be the most underrated destination in Europe.

Ljubljana is a charming riverside capital filled with outdoor cafés, colorful buildings, and a hilltop castle. From there, families head into the Julian Alps where Lake Bled delivers one of the most magical landscapes in Europe.

Kids love rowing out to the tiny island church in the middle of the lake, while parents appreciate that Slovenia feels like Switzerland — but without Swiss pricing.

Add hiking, rafting, and alpine scenery and you have an incredibly balanced family trip.

Japan: Tokyo + Kyoto or Hakone

Japan is endlessly fascinating for both kids and adults.

Tokyo feels like stepping into the future — neon lights, incredible food, high-speed trains, and neighborhoods that each feel like their own mini-city.

Then the pace shifts in Kyoto or Hakone, where temples, gardens, and traditional inns offer a quieter cultural experience.

Families can take sushi-making classes, visit bamboo forests, ride bullet trains, and explore centuries-old temples — all in one trip.

Japan is also famously safe and clean, which makes it much easier to navigate than many people expect.

Portugal: Lisbon + Porto + The Countryside

Portugal has quietly become one of Europe’s most appealing family destinations.

Lisbon charms visitors with colorful tiled buildings, historic trams climbing steep hills, and incredible seafood. Porto offers riverside beauty and access to the Douro Valley vineyards.

Many families add a few days in the countryside or along the coast where life slows down and the scenery becomes vineyards, cliffs, and beaches.

Portugal feels authentically European but refreshingly relaxed.

Vietnam: Hanoi + Lan Ha Bay + Hoi An

Vietnam is one of the most vibrant destinations you can visit.

In Hanoi, the streets buzz with scooters, markets, and tiny restaurants serving some of the best food in the world. From there, many families take an overnight cruise through Lan Ha Bay or Ha Long Bay, sailing past limestone islands rising dramatically from emerald water.

Hoi An offers a beautiful finale with lantern-lit streets, beaches, and tailor shops where kids can design custom clothing.

It’s colorful, delicious, and endlessly interesting.

Morocco: Marrakech + Atlas Mountains + Essaouira

Morocco is sensory travel in the best possible way.

In Marrakech, families wander through maze-like souks, explore ornate palaces, and stay in beautiful riads hidden behind carved wooden doors.

From there, many travelers head into the Atlas Mountains for hiking, scenic views, and traditional Berber villages before finishing along the breezy Atlantic coast in Essaouira.

It’s exotic and fascinating, but still very accessible with the right itinerary.

Croatia: Split + The Dalmatian Islands + Dubrovnik

Croatia combines history, island life, and incredibly clear water.

Many families start in Split where Roman ruins blend seamlessly into everyday city life. From there, ferries connect to islands like Hvar or Brač where the focus shifts to swimming, boating, and relaxed beach days.

Dubrovnik provides a spectacular finale with its medieval walls and sweeping views over the Adriatic.

It’s one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe.

Peru: Lima + The Sacred Valley + Cusco

Peru offers one of the most rewarding cultural trips in the Americas.

Lima has become one of the world’s great food cities, while the Sacred Valley offers stunning landscapes filled with Inca ruins and traditional villages.

Families can explore ancient terraces, visit markets, meet llamas and alpacas, and learn about one of history’s most impressive civilizations.

Machu Picchu is of course the highlight for many travelers, but the entire region is fascinating.

Oaxaca, Mexico

Mexico: Mexico City + Oaxaca

Mexico offers incredible cultural depth once you move beyond the beach resorts.

Mexico City is one of the most exciting capitals in the world, with fantastic museums, historic neighborhoods, street food, and some of the best restaurants in the Americas.

From there, Oaxaca offers colorful markets, Zapotec ruins like Monte Albán, and some of the most distinctive cuisine in Mexico.

It’s an incredible combination of food, history, and culture.

South Korea: Seoul + Gyeongju + Busan

South Korea is still flying under the radar for many travelers.

Seoul is an energetic capital filled with street food markets, royal palaces, and futuristic design. From there, families can visit Gyeongju — often called “the museum without walls” — where ancient temples and tombs dot the landscape.

Busan provides a coastal finale with beaches, seafood markets, and mountain views.

It’s a dynamic and fascinating destination.

Vietnam’s Neighbor: Cambodia (Siem Reap + Angkor)

Cambodia is one of the most visually impressive places in Southeast Asia.

Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples are enormous, mysterious, and surprisingly fun for kids to explore. Imagine giant tree roots wrapping around ancient stone temples and hidden corridors waiting to be discovered.

Siem Reap also offers cooking classes, floating villages, and fantastic local food.

It’s one of those places that stays with you long after the trip ends.

Guatemala: Antigua + Lake Atitlán + Tikal

Guatemala is one of the most culturally rich destinations in Central America.

Antigua is a beautiful colonial town surrounded by volcanoes. Lake Atitlán offers stunning scenery and traditional Mayan villages, each with its own personality.

And then there’s Tikal — one of the most impressive ancient cities in the Americas, where massive temples rise above the jungle canopy.

It’s adventurous, beautiful, and incredibly rewarding.

Why These Trips Work So Well for Families

The best family trips combine culture, scenery, and experiences that kids actually remember.

Instead of another week spent entirely at a resort, these destinations offer cooking classes, wildlife encounters, historical sites, boat rides, markets, temples, and incredible landscapes.

And surprisingly, many of them can offer better value than classic luxury destinations if you plan them thoughtfully.

Sometimes the most meaningful family trips are simply the ones that are a little outside the usual routine.
