Switzerland by Rail: The Ultimate Guide to Train Times and Scenic Journeys

If you've ever dreamed of watching the Alps glide past your window while sipping a glass of Swiss white wine — Switzerland's legendary train network is your answer. Switzerland has arguably the most impressive rail system in the world, and a handful of iconic panoramic trains turn the journey itself into a destination. Now let’s talk about classic Swiss train journeys.

The Glacier Express

Route: Zermatt → St. Moritz (or reverse) Distance: ~291 km (181 miles) Duration: ~7.5–8 hours Operates: Year-round

Billed as "the world's slowest express train," the Glacier Express is the most famous scenic rail journey in Switzerland — and it lives up to every bit of its reputation. The narrow-gauge train winds its way between Zermatt, nestled beneath the Matterhorn, and St. Moritz, Switzerland's glittering Alpine resort, crossing 291 bridges, passing through 91 tunnels, and cresting the Oberalp Pass at 2,033 meters above sea level.

The journey takes a leisurely 7.5 to 8 hours, which gives you ample time to settle in with a three-course lunch served at your seat (with wine, of course), watch the scenery shift from rocky gorges to flower-filled valleys to snow-capped peaks, and simply exhale. The panoramic windows — which extend up into the ceiling — are designed to frame the landscape like a painting.

Insider tip: First class gives couples a private table for two on one side of the aisle, a significant upgrade over the shared tables in second class. Seat reservations are mandatory and should be booked well in advance for summer travel. Excellence Class is really the best though — but it must be booked months in advance. Tickets open in October.

The Bernina Express

Route: Chur → Tirano, Italy (or St. Moritz → Tirano) Distance: ~122 km (76 miles) for the full Chur–Tirano route Duration: ~4 hours (Chur–Tirano); ~2.5 hours (St. Moritz–Tirano) Operates: Year-round

Many seasoned travelers rank the Bernina Express above the Glacier Express — and it's easy to see why. In just four hours, the vivid red train climbs from St. Moritz's high alpine world, crosses the Bernina Pass at 2,253 meters (the highest railway crossing in the Alps), glides past shimmering glaciers and turquoise lakes, and descends all the way to Tirano, Italy — where palm trees and gelato await.

The entire route is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the engineering is breathtaking: 55 tunnels, 196 bridges, and the iconic Brusio Spiral Viaduct, where the train makes a complete 360° loop to manage the steep descent — one of the most jaw-dropping moments in train travel anywhere in the world.

Insider tip: There's no dining car, but a rolling minibar comes through, and you're welcome to bring a picnic. The Bernina Express runs in both directions daily; the full Chur–Tirano route takes four hours, while the shorter St. Moritz–Tirano run is around 2.5 hours. Seat reservations are required for the panoramic cars.

The GoldenPass Express

Route: Montreux → Interlaken (or reverse) Distance: ~115 km (72 miles) Duration: ~3 hours 15 minutes (direct) Full GoldenPass Line, Montreux → Lucerne: ~188 km, ~5.5 hours with connections Operates: Year-round

The GoldenPass is a revelation, and the newest addition to Switzerland's premium panoramic rail lineup. When it launched in December 2022, it solved a 150-year-old engineering puzzle: how to run a single direct train between Montreux on Lake Geneva and Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland, two towns linked by incompatible rail gauges. The answer was a train with adjustable wheel widths — a world first.

The result is a seamless 3-hour-15-minute journey through some of Switzerland's most varied scenery: vine-covered terraces above Lake Geneva, charming villages in the Pays-d'Enhaut, the upscale ski resort of Gstaad, sweeping mountain valleys, and finally the shimmering double lakes of Interlaken.

For the full GoldenPass experience, you can add the Luzern–Interlaken Express (about 2 hours over the Brünig Pass) to extend the journey all the way to Lucerne, covering 188 km in approximately 5.5 hours total.

Insider tip: The GoldenPass Express offers a unique Prestige Class — swivel seats, at-seat dining service, and a genuinely luxurious experience for travelers who want something extra. This is one of the best upgrades in European train travel. The train runs four times daily in each direction; reservations are strongly recommended.

The Gotthard Panorama Express

Route: Lucerne → Lugano (boat + train), or reverse Distance: Boat: Lucerne to Flüelen across Lake Lucerne; Train: Flüelen to Lugano (~125 km) Duration: ~5.5 hours total (approximately half by boat, half by train) Operates: April to October only

The Gotthard Panorama Express is Switzerland's most theatrical rail journey — because it isn't just a train. It begins with a three-hour steamboat cruise across the length of Lake Lucerne, gliding past the historic Rütli meadow (the birthplace of the Swiss Confederacy), the Tell Chapel, and some of the most dramatic lakeside scenery in Europe. At Flüelen, you step off the boat and onto the panoramic first-class-only train that climbs the original Gotthard railway — completed in 1882 — over the Alps toward the Italian-speaking south.

The train section takes approximately 2.5 hours to reach Lugano, descending through spiral tunnels, past the famously photogenic church of Wassen (you'll see it from three different angles as the train loops around the valley), and eventually arriving in sunny, palm-lined Lugano — which feels as much Italian as Swiss.

Insider tip: The train is first class only (second class ticket holders need an upgrade). A unique "photo car" with windows that open lets you take unobstructed shots. The entire experience feels like a full travel day — plan accordingly and don't try to stack other activities on the same afternoon. Runs April through October only; one departure per day in each direction.

The Luzern–Interlaken Express

Route: Lucerne → Interlaken (or reverse) Distance: ~74 km (46 miles) Duration: ~2 hours Operates: Year-round

Less famous than its panoramic siblings but absolutely stunning, the Luzern–Interlaken Express is often the connector between the GoldenPass and the rest of Switzerland. It crosses the Brünig Pass and strings together a gorgeous series of lakes — Sarner See, Lunger See, Lake Brienz — with the Bernese Alps as a constant backdrop.

For the best lake views, sit on the right side traveling from Lucerne to Interlaken. Some trains feature a bistro car serving hot meals and drinks.

Tips for Planning Your Swiss Rail Journey

The Swiss Travel Pass covers all of these routes (travel fare only) and is almost always worth it for a multi-day Swiss itinerary. (If you are only taking one to three trains though, I don’t know if the Swiss Pass is worth it. Check the math first.) Seat reservations for the premium panoramic trains are separate and mandatory — budget an extra CHF 10–25 per train depending on the service.

Best time to go: June through September offers the best mountain scenery, with snow still visible on the peaks but valleys in full bloom. October delivers spectacular fall color, especially on the Bernina line. The Glacier Express and GoldenPass run year-round; the Gotthard Panorama Express is summer-only (April–October).

Combine them: The classic multi-day combination is Glacier Express (Zermatt to St. Moritz) + Bernina Express (St. Moritz to Tirano) + GoldenPass (Montreux to Interlaken). This can be done in 4–5 days and covers the essential spine of Switzerland.

Book early: The most scenic seats on the Glacier Express and Bernina Express sell out weeks in advance in peak season. If you want front-row panoramic seats on the GoldenPass Express or a table for two on the Glacier Express, book the moment your trip dates are confirmed.
