Off the Beaten Track in Italy

Before I dive into this week’s newsletter, just a quick heads up…I will be in Mexico for my BIG MILESTONE birthday this week! So I will not be available for travel consultations from April 25 to April 30. So if you wan to talk travel, let’s talk before I go! Book a complimentary vacation consultation here. I’ll probably post some pics to Facebook while I’m away so like my page on Facebook for all the Mexico updates.

Now let’s talk Italy. I still have a lot of people coming to me wanting Italy this summer. And while Italy is always a good idea, I’m going to warn you: Italy this summer (like last summer) will be very crowded. So while Florence, Venice, and Rome hold undeniable charm, remember that Italy boasts a treasure trove of destinations waiting to be explored. For travelers seeking an escape from the well-trodden tourist path, consider these some of these locations, each offering a unique blend of history, culture, and luxury accommodations.

1. Puglia: Unveiling the Southern Charm

Puglia, the "heel" of Italy's boot, offers a sun-drenched escape with a rich history.

Experiences: Puglia is known for its stunning coastline, perfect for boat tours and seaside relaxation. Indulge in cooking classes, learning the secrets of Puglian cuisine, or explore the captivating Trulli houses, traditional Apulian dwellings with conical roofs.

2. Piedmont: Wine Country Elegance

Italy's northwest region, Piedmont, is a paradise for wine enthusiasts. Rolling hills covered in vineyards and charming towns await.

  • Langhe: Nestled in the heart of Barolo wine country, this region offers breathtaking scenery and historic villages. The Casa di Langhe hotel [Virtuoso] is a sustainable 39-room retreat in Northern Italy’s renowned Barolo, Barbaresco, and Alta Langa regions.

  • Stresa: Located on the shores of Lake Maggiore, Stresa offers stunning views and a relaxed atmosphere. Check out this multi-stop tour of Northern Italy that visits Stresa.

Experiences: Beyond wine tastings, Piedmont offers hot air balloon rides for a breathtaking view of the vineyards, truffle hunting experiences, and cooking classes focused on regional specialties. You can also visit the elegant city of Turin or explore nearby Lake Orta.

3. The Dolomites: Mountain Majesty

For travelers seeking an active and scenic getaway, the Dolomites offer a spectacular mountain backdrop. (This is one of my dream vacations.)

Experiences: The Dolomites offer a playground for outdoor enthusiasts, with hiking, biking, rock climbing, and water sports opportunities. In winter, skiing and snowboarding reign supreme. Travelers can also visit charming mountain villages and explore local history and culture. Ready to talk Dolomites? Book a complimentary vacation consultation here.

4. Emilia-Romagna: Foodie Paradise

This region is a haven for gourmands, home to iconic dishes like Bolognese sauce and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.

Experiences: Emilia-Romagna is a foodie paradise, with cooking classes, food tours, and visits to local producers. Try a traditional balsamic vinegar tasting or learn to make pasta from scratch. Beyond food, the region boasts historic cities like Parma and Ferrara, waiting to be explored.

5. Sardinia: Island Escape

Sardinia, a large island off the coast of Italy, offers stunning beaches, turquoise waters, and a rich cultural heritage.

Experiences: Sardinia is perfect for swimming, sailing, and exploring hidden coves. Rent a car and visit ancient archaeological sites around the island for more of a historical stay.

Italy really never gets boring for me but remember, there’s more to the country than Florence, Venice and Rome. Let me help you plan your next trip to some of these more off-the-beaten path locations! Book a complimentary vacation consultation here.
