What to Pack for a Galápagos Cruise

Planning a cruise to the Galápagos Islands? One of the most common questions travelers ask is what to pack for a Galápagos cruise.

Unlike a traditional cruise, Galápagos sailings are all about wildlife, adventure, and active excursions. Think snorkeling with sea lions, walking volcanic trails, and exploring by Zodiac. Check out my report on my experience with Lindblad back in January.

The good news? You do not need to overpack. You just need the right essentials.

1. Lightweight, Comfortable Clothing

The Galápagos is casual and active, so focus on comfort. Pack these items:

  • Quick-dry shirts and breathable layers

  • Hiking pants or shorts

  • Two swimsuits

  • Lightweight jacket or rain shell

  • Casual onboard clothes

  • Boot socks. In a few places, you may need to wear rubber boots. (You do not need to bring rubber boots; these will be provided.)

Packing tip: Choose clothes with sun protection and quick-drying fabrics for excursions.

2. Sun Protection is Essential

The equatorial sun can be intense. Do not forget:

  • Reef safe sunscreen

  • Wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap, useful for windy Zodiac rides

  • Polarized sunglasses

  • SPF lip balm

  • UPF sun shirt

A good sun shirt may be one of the most-used items in your suitcase.

3. Shoes for Wet Landings and Hiking

One of the biggest Galápagos packing mistakes is bringing the wrong shoes. Bring these things:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes

  • Water shoes or sport sandals. We really recommend closed-toed sports sandals like Keens.  I found that wearing Tevas left my feet too exposed and they weren’t great for long walks.

  • Easy sandals for onboard

You may encounter sandy beaches, lava rocks, and wet landings all in one day.

4. Snorkeling and Excursion Gear

Most expedition cruises provide snorkeling gear, but these extras are useful:

  • Rash guard

  • Dry bag. We recommend at least 5L, possibly 10L, depending on how much gear you have.

  • Waterproof phone pouch

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Small daypack

Wildlife encounters here can be incredible, so being prepared makes them even better.

5. Extras Worth Packing

Small things that can make a big difference:

  • Binoculars for wildlife viewing

  • Motion sickness remedies

  • Insect repellent

  • Portable charger

  • Camera or GoPro

  • Magnetic hooks for your cabin so you have more storage space

  • Basic first-aid items (blister bandages especially — wet landings + lava rock + new shoes is a classic blister scenario)

  • Headlamp or small flashlight (some ships do early morning landings)

  • Cash in small USD bills for tips and the few shops on populated islands

  • A pack of cards or small games like LRC or Pass the Pigs

What Not to Pack

Skip the overpacking. You likely will not need:

  • Formalwear

  • High heels

  • Too many outfit changes

  • Heavy luggage

Galápagos cruises are relaxed and practical.

Final Thoughts

Packing for a Galápagos cruise is less about packing more and more and more about packing smart.

Focus on sun protection, comfortable activewear, and gear for adventure, and you will be ready for one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations on earth.

And once you are snorkeling beside sea lions or watching giant tortoises in the wild, you will be glad you packed well.
